Now open to the public in Schow and Sawyer libraries, this student art provocation creates space for the community to share “withheld words, the ones that cannot or should not be said.”
Student artist Maddy Andersen ’25 invites viewers to write a letter and add it to the box, turning the object into “a repository for the unspoken — a place to release the thoughts and feelings that might otherwise weigh on you.”
Full Artist Statement:
Everyone has a relationship that ended with something left unsaid — an ex-partner, a former friend, an estranged family member. Maybe you’ve felt the pull to say one more thing but held back, unsure if it’s worth reaching out. This letterbox is for those withheld words, the ones that connot or should not be said.
If you’d like, take a moment to write a letter. You can use the supplies here or your own. My hope is that this box becomes a repository for the unspoken — a place to release the thoughts and feelings that might otherwise weigh on you. While your letter will never be read, there’s a catharsis in letting go.
