On display in Sawyer: Home- Reflections on Identity and Belonging

On November 15th, the Williams Choirs presented a concert entitled “Lineage: Music of Politics and Identity.” As part of the concert, the choir wished to shed light on the diversity of identities and perspectives in the performance space and in our larger community through a live art project.

Prior to the concert, each choir member was asked to share a single word that encapsulates their sense of identity, or that creates within them a feeling of belonging. Artists from the choir crafted the basic outline of the banner using the submitted words.

At the concert, the audience was asked to share their words, and during the performance of a piece entitled Home the student artists added the audience’s words to the banner to complete the project.

The banner is now hanging in the new acquisitions area in Sawyer. We invite you to add your voice to the conversation. In a notebook hanging next to the banner, you can share a word that celebrates your identity or engenders belonging for you.
