Constitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day, commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution by its framers in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. A copy of the second of two draft printings of the Constitution used by delegates to the convention, owned and annotated by George Mason of Virginia and including his handwritten objections to the final document (he opposed ratification), is in the Chapin Library’s collections and on permanent display in the Chapin Gallery together with original printings of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Bill of Rights, as well as other historic documents. These Founding Documents may be seen whenever Special Collections is open, Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
