First World War papers in the Archives

Spring 2018 intern Brad Havill arranged and described several collections of personal papers in the College Archives, including collections of correspondence and photographs from two Williams graduates who served in the First World War. The Davis P. Kelly papers document Kelly’s lifelong comradeship with fellow ambulance drivers from the Section Sanitaire (Etats-) Unis 62. The William Richard Witherell papers include numerous letters to Witherell’s wife Katherine, some of which had passages cut out by Army censors. Thanks to Brad, both collections are available for research use in the Special Collections reading room. Contact us for more information.

Brad served in the United States Navy for six years before pursuing a Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science at Simmons College, where he is currently enrolled.
