Construction of new Sawyer Library has been delayed for a second year due to national economy and the college's financial situation. The Board of Trustees is committed to this project and to the current program. The extra time will be used to learn more about project financing and to further explore sustainability opportunities and to ensure adaptability of the new space to meet needs that will doubtless change over time. The goal is now to begin construction early in the fall of 2011 with building occupancy in late summer 2014.
The new
Sawyer Library will be a dynamic research center. Home of the social sciences and humanities collections and the library's Learning Commons the new library complex will also house the College Archives, the Chapin
Library and the Center for Media Initiatives. The co-location of collections, services and technology promises to create an engaging space for learning and teaching. By
melding historic Stetson with new
construction, the new library will stand as a wordless metaphor
representing
the finest of old and new, a symbolic union of tradition and future.
