What should I do if I can't find an item on the shelves?

  1. Double-check the item status in FRANCIS. Make sure it has a status of Available or Non-Circ. If the item is checked out, see How do I get a book that is checked-out?
  2. Double-check the location in FRANCIS. The item might be on reserve or shelved in a special location (folio, reference, atlas case, etc.). Click on location icon in the upper right corner of the FRANCIS record if you are unsure where to find the location in the library.
  3. Double-check the call number. Did you find other items with a similar call number, but not the one you needed? If not, you may have read the call number incorrectly. See How to Read a Call Number.

If you have tried these steps, go to the Access Services Desk at Sawyer or the Services Desk at Schow. They can check to see if the item was recently returned and complete a form to do a more extensive search for it. If it turns out that the item is missing, you can borrow it from another library.
