(Sawyer Library Lobby)
This year's Williams Reads book is Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The novel depicts the life of Arnold "Junior" Spirit, a teenager living on the Spokane Indian Reservation and attending school in Reardan, a mostly white community 20 miles away. This display features a selection of books and videos from the Sawyer Library collection on some of the themes from the novel including alcoholism, identity and assimilation, Native American education, and stereotypes/representations of Native Americans. See bibliography for list of items in the exhibit and Williams Reads website.
