Government Documents

(Sawyer Library Lobby)

This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of Williams College Library's status as a United States Federal Depository Library. One of the first in the country to be so designated in 1858, Williams College Library has over the years received and preserved an astonishing variety of information in federal documents, including the venerable Congressional Record and Congressional hearings, reports and findings from Federal agencies documenting United States foreign and domestic policy, and statistical data on almost any subject imaginable.

Thanks to the Federal Depository Library Program, generations of students, faculty, and local citizens have been able to use primary source United States government documents for information, study, and scholarly analysis.

We are committed to continuing to provide and preserve U.S. Federal information and official documents in the most usable and accessible forms; this probably will mean in years to come that our collection will become a hybrid of commercially available digital resources and federally distributed documents in a variety of formats. However, the core mission remains the same: to provide scholars and citizens of the Williams community with relevant government information and to preserve access to our rich and deep historical collection for generations to come.
