An index to scholarly articles, dissertations, and book reviews on the history and culture of North America (United States and Canada) from prehistory to the present. Covers approximately 1,800 journals.

Readers' Guide Abstracts (1983-Present )
Index to general interest periodicals such as Time, Newsweek, Jet, etc.
Print index, located in the 1st floor hallway, is good for browsing sub-topics related to Hurricane Katrina.

Government Information

Catalog of Government Publications (1976-current)
The CGP is the finding tool for federal publications issued through the Government Printing Office (GPO); includes descriptive records for historical and current publications and provides direct links to those that are available online.

Congressional Publications (1789 - Present)
Index and partial full-text of Congressional prints, hearings, reports, legislative histories, and Congressional Record. Search in Witness Affiliation or Witness fields to limit results to hearing testimony by particular organizations or individuals.

Google U.S. Government Search
Google's search power limited to .gov and .mil sites. Use to search for recent state and federal government hearings, reports, and statements.

City of New Orleans
The website for the city government.

Provides news stories and multimedia from the nine-part series Katrina, One Year Later, a blog of evacuee stories, and graphics and photos.

ProQuest National Newspapers (Current News)
Full-text of articles from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and other highly circulated US newspapers.

Articles only - does not include graphics, photos, advertisement or classifieds. New York Times Magazine and Book Reviews are available as PDFs with graphics included.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - News
Provides access to full-text articles from U.S. national and regional news sources, English language newspapers and newswires from around the world.

    Search Tips:
    • For Louisiana sources, you can use this Louisiana News Sources search form.
    • For other regional newspapers, go to the Source tab.
      • Choose Browse Sources.
      • Select United States under country, then a region or state, and then General News Sources
      • Click the News folder and select the sources you'd like to search.

Full-text of articles from newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic minorities and native press in the United States.

Multimedia/Web

A P Images (1920s-Present)
Current and historical archive from the Associated Press. Includes over 1 million primary source photos, 24,000 maps, logos, and graphics, and more than 4,500 hours of audio files dating from the 1920's. For maps and graphics, make sure to choose the Graphics tab.

Google Blog Search
Search text of blogs indexed by Google. Use the Advanced Search screen to limit to dates around the time of the hurricane.

Internet Archive
"A digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form." Use the Wayback Machine to see archived copies of a specific website on a particular date. The Moving Images section has user-generated videos like YouTube.

Vanderbilt Television News Archive (1968-Present)
The collection holds individual network evening news broadcasts from the major U.S. national broadcast networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, and special news-related programming including ABC's Nightline. Special reports cover presidential press conferences and political campaign coverage, and major national and international events. CNN and NBC broadcasts are available online through the archive; others must be requested through Williams Interlibrary loan.
