Foundations of the Earth

“Foundations of the Earth: The Literature of Geology” presents rare books of the 15th to 19th centuries from the Chapin Library’s collections to celebrate 200 years of teaching Geosciences at Williams. Complementing the Archives exhibition in the Steven Schow ’81 Gallery (Sawyer 455), the new display looks at the larger history of Geology from the medicinal virtues of minerals, early theories of the Earth, and the causes of earthquakes to methods of mining, geological surveys, and William Holmes’ impressive lithographs of the Grand Canyon. “Foundations of the Earth” is on view this summer in the Chapin Gallery (Sawyer 406), Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 5:00.
